Financial literacy, one decision at a time

My money.
My decision.
My future.

Nobody handed me the tools, so I learned them the hard way and I'm handing them to you. Five decisions, in order, that put you in control of your money and start closing the wealth gap. You make the call. I'll show you the road.

Start with decision one

Real talk before you click: some links on this page are affiliate links. If you open an account through one, I may earn a commission, at no extra cost to you. It never changes your price, and I only put my name next to things I'd hand my own kids. When you see a product marked "no commission," that means I earn nothing from it and I'm recommending it anyway.

My Story

I watched grown adults drown, and I knew there was a better way.

My name is Lucus Fuentes. I'm a teacher and a former licensed banker, and before any of that I was a kid getting up at 4:30 am with my sibling to cut weeds with a hoe and a shovel on 2½ acres. Our dad worked the Railroad, our mom was a cafeteria lady, and they showed me what a real work ethic looks like by living it.

I spent 8 years in the life insurance business and then went to work at a top 3 national bank. That's where it hit me. I sat at my desk going over transactions with grown adults who weren't any good at tracking their finances, living check to payday loan check, paying a fee on top of an overdraft fee. Nobody ever taught them. The schools graduate kids with almost no practice handling money, and then we act surprised when they struggle.

You know son, no matter what you choose to do in life you're going to have to work hard at it. You can choose to work hard inside in air conditioning, or you can choose to work hard outside when it's scorching hot, cold and raining. It's your choice. My dad, while we were cleaning up after the goats

That's the whole idea behind this site. The work is coming either way. So let's put it toward something that's yours. I built a simple path anyone can follow, no jargon, no mountaintop preaching, just the steps I wish somebody had laid out for me. My job now is to help the masses get their financial lives situated, and to close the wealth gap one decision and one family at a time.

Loves Always,
Lucus Fuentes

The Path

Five decisions. In order. Each one builds the next.

Start at step one and work down. You don't need money to start, you need to start. Pick the option that fits where you're at, and take the action.

1

Open my first account

Everything starts with where my money lives. I spent years at a bank watching grown adults pay a fee, then a fee on top of that fee, just to use their own money. Nobody ever showed them there was another way. So this is decision one, a checking account that doesn't nickel and dime me, with the tools I already use to split rent and pay people back. Get this right and I've got solid ground to stand on for everything that comes next.

Chime

If you're starting from scratch, start here. No monthly fees, no minimum balance, and you can get paid up to two days early. It's the same app you'll use to build credit in step three, so you're not bouncing around. Simple, and it doesn't take a cut of your money just for holding it.

SoFi Checking & Savings

No account fees, no minimums, and Zelle is built right in so you can split rent or pay a friend back the day you open it. The part I like for you is it grows up with you. The same app holds your checking, your savings, and later your first investments, so you're not starting over when you're ready for the next step.

Citi Checking

If you want a big established bank with branches you can walk into, Citi gives you that plus Zelle for sending money fast. It's the traditional name on this list, good for the person who wants a bank that's been around a long time and offers a little of everything under one roof.

Schwab Checking

Schwab is the one I don't earn a dime on, so trust me when I tell you it's worth a look. If you've got 5,000 or more ready to put to work, this is the account I'd point you to. It keeps your checking and a brokerage in the same place, so the money you're not spending can actually start growing. No account fees, no minimums, and they pay back every ATM fee worldwide, even overseas. If you're just opening your first account with a small balance, one of the picks above is simpler.

See my credit clearly

You can't fix what you can't see. My credit score is quietly making decisions about my life, the apartment I can rent, the car I can finance, the rate I'll pay on both, and most people have no idea where they stand until they get told no. Before any of that, I need to look at the number. Checking it the right way doesn't hurt it, it just turns the lights on so I know what I'm working with.

Credit Karma

See your score and what's moving it, free, without the guessing. Checking it here doesn't hurt your credit, it just turns the lights on. Know your number before you make a single move, because every rate you'll ever be offered starts with it.

Build my credit on purpose

Here's where I take the action that actually builds the number. Credit isn't about spending money I don't have, that's the trap I watched too many people fall into. It's about proving I pay back what I borrow, on time, every time. A secured card lets me do that using my own money as the safety net. Use it small, pay it off in full every month, and let it quietly build a history that opens doors for me later.

Chime Credit Builder

If you opened your checking with Chime, this is the easy next move. No credit check, no annual fee, no interest, and no minimum deposit. You move your own money over, spend on it, and Chime reports every on-time payment to all three credit bureaus. That's how a number that opens doors later starts getting built today, using money you already have.

OpenSky Plus Secured Visa

No checking account required and no credit check to get approved. You put down a refundable deposit, that becomes your limit, and OpenSky reports to all three bureaus every month. Go with the Plus version, it carries no annual fee. Use it small, pay it in full every month, and let it do its quiet work in the background.

Put my spare change to work

I don't need a pile of money to start investing, I need to start. The round-up method takes the spare change from what I'm already buying and puts it to work, a few cents at a time, without me even thinking about it. The mistake most people make isn't picking the wrong investment, it's waiting for the perfect moment that never comes. Small and steady, starting today, beats perfect and someday every time.

Acorns

Acorns rounds up what you already spend and invests the change, so you start without feeling it. A coffee here, a tank of gas there, and the spare cents go to work. You don't need to know the stock market to begin. You just need to start, and this starts you on autopilot.

5

Buy my first home

This is the one that changes everything. Every month I rent, I'm paying off somebody else's house and building their wealth instead of mine. Owning flips that, my payment starts building something that belongs to me and my family. This is exactly where the wealth gap closes, one decision and one family at a time. It's the biggest step on this list, and by the time I get here, I'll have built the foundation to take it.
